NEW GLOBAL PROGRAMS INTRODUCED BY INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF MOTORSPORT SCIENCES (ICMS)

Leading Motorsport Safety & Research Association helps bring guidance to youth through Mentor Program and increased member connectivity through Ambassador Program.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (July 21, 2021) – The ICMS Mentor Program was founded to assist young motorsports enthusiasts with the chance to enter the racing world with proper supervision from an ICMS member as the students complete their schooling and training to launch their career. This unique global program was developed for students who have a passion for the motorsports industry.

Designed and executed by the ICMS, this new program has been established to connect an ICMS member as a mentor to students with aspirations to serve in the medical and/or safety rescue sector of the motorsports industry.

The ICMS is an association of scientific and educational professionals and others concerned with the improvement of performance and safety in the motorsport industry. ICMS members are involved in all of forms of motorsport around the world.

Learning from an ICMS mentor will be invaluable training for those wanting to participate in the racing medical or safety rescue field. ICMS members will share real life experiences, provide input on career opportunities and assist with networking with others in the industry.

Led by ICMS Education Committee Chair, Dr. David Ferguson from Michigan State University (fergu312@msu.edu) and ICMS Executive Director Tom Weisenbach (Tom@theICMS.org), this new program will work with universities and colleges globally as well as the leadership of programs at those schools to offer this unique opportunity for their students through the ICMS members who live in 27 U.S. states and 20 countries.

“The ICMS Mentor Program is a great opportunity for students to learn a craft from the best in the motorsports business,” said Weisenbach. “In addition, the ICMS will be launching virtual networking events for the ICMS student members so they can have open discussions about their studies and career pathway while meeting key players in the industry.”

Ferguson is excited to help the next generation of talent for the motorsports medical and science fields, “We will be connecting with different programs at schools from around the world. Particularly the medical programs, but will also connect with heads of Exercise & Kinesiology, PT, OT, Nursing, Engineering, etc. The ICMS looks forward to connecting with programs that offer EMT and Fire training as these also make up a large portion of track safety workers. We need the leadership of these programs to make their students aware of the ICMS and our Mentor program.”

Another ICMS program being launched around the world is the ICMS Ambassador Program led by Weisenbach, Mark Tyler, MD from Cambridgeshire, England and Rickard Johansson, a fire lieutenant for High Coast Ådalens Rescue Service in Sundsvall, Sweden.

Weisenbach, Tyler and Johansson developed the Ambassador Program to expand the awareness of the ICMS globally. Ambassadors will host events (live & virtual) on behalf of the ICMS. They will serve as an ICMS promoter in that region and help with education on the ICMS mission and membership. The ambassadors will serve as recruiters for the ICMS and assist with promotion of our events and benefits.

About the ICMS: The ICMS, formed in 1988, was designed to promote research and discussion related to motorsport safety and performance and to share information with the motorsport participant, race team management and organizing bodies and federations to improve the human element of the sport.
